A sad day around our house. Oboe was hit by a car and did not survive. Unlike the tragic event that brought him into our lives, this story isn’t going to have a surprise happy ending (for those who like such things, a great photo of Oboe meeting Tuba at the previous link.) One of the people at our wonderful vet’s office saw him get hit and scooped him up right away (the vet’s office is right across James st from our house). But his injuries were too severe and there was nothing that could be done. They gave him pain medication, so he didn’t suffer. And while good to know, it’s ultimately a small comfort. The bad part about loving a pet, or loving anything living on this earth, is that none of nature’s creatures can be here forever. In a better mood, I might be able to wax poetical about “who would want to live forever”. But today, I’m just bummed about my cat. So the best I can do is to encourage us all to remember that nothing is guaranteed and that now is the time to tell those you love how much you care about them. Do it now so that later on you don’t have to wish you had. We’ll miss you Oboe. Thanks for the friendship. Filed under: Animals and Things I love Comments: 6 Comments |

MothersRoot was generous enough to provide us a year of free Zoo for North’s bday. To celebrate we saddled up while they were in town and drove HW26 to visit those fair critters. Penguins, lions, and bears! Oh my! Filed under: Animals and Family and Jack and North Comments: 5 Comments |

We’ve got some smart eco-minds that read the BR, so I know someone will have some helpful suggestion here. Sadly, like everything these days, the Bellingham dog parks are having their budget cut. This is most evident in that there are no longer poop bags at the park for you to use to pick up and dispose of your dog’s messes. Given how often people were too lazy to pick up after their dogs when there WERE bags at the park, I might have looked for other ways to cut costs. But knowing how popular those parks are in our dog-loving corner of the world, I imagine the parks dept. was spending more than any of us would expect on poop bags each year. So, the plan is for the dog owner community to bring in plastic shopping type bags and “recycle” them by leaving them for others to use. My question: Is it better to use a product twice, but throw it away after the second use, or to use it once but recycle after that use? While we do our best to try and use the canvas shopping bag on our trips to the store, the fact is that with two kids and a scatterbrained husband, it doesn’t happen 100% of the time. So we eventually end up with a pile of shopping bags from Haggen/Target/etc. Usually, I take the bags to the recycling box at the local Haggen after we get a big enough pile of them. Of course we reuse a few around the house for whatever we can, but we always end up with more than we use. So, should I keep recycling or take these bags to the dog park? Which is the better move in a “green” sense? And even after that, how does the “helping out the local dog community” feel-good aspect factor in? I’m inclined to just take them to the dog park. But you know me, I love dogs more than I love the earth. Filed under: Animals and Josh's random life Comments: 14 Comments |

Griffen is back from his knee surgery. The vet said everything went smoothly. But I figure we won’t really know until he starts the road to recovery. He’s on EXTREMELY limited activity until Haloween and on very limited activity until Hanukkah. Plus, he’s on a diet to help prevent further joint damage. Though it’s not all bad, the vet did say that carrots are a great healthy treat for him. And he loves carrots more than just about any other food in the world. But still, he’s got a lot of boring days ahead of him until he has recovered. Poop pooch. He’s a trooper. Filed under: Animals and Things I love Comments: 6 Comments |

Griffen somehow blew out his ACL. So he needs expensive knee surgery. And get this, the $2500 one is actually the CHEAP choice. The other option is $5000. But don’t worry, the $2500 one is experimental and doesn’t have much long term study for big dogs. The good news is that it can always be undone and we can do the $5000 surgery if the first one doesn’t work. And to be fair, because he is a pet blood bank blood donor , he gets 10% off, so it’s really only $2250. He’s lucky he’s such a great dog. Then again, I’m lucky he’s such a great dog too. All joking aside, I’m a bit worried about him. He’s at the vet right now on the operating table. I know it isn’t life threatening or anything. But I’ve never in my adult life had to have a dog get surgery. And despite my confidence in our vet (who really is great), it’s hard not to worry a little. Today’s episode finds the Rooty Boys trying to decipher what in the world happened to Josh’s lawn. Why was there a giant dead circle in the middle of the backyard? Was it aliens? A sinkhole precursor? A very small herbicide spill? The first clue came in the form of a notorious criminal and known source of toxic gas that can kill just about anything: He was the boys’ main suspect until he pointed out that his ‘exhaust port’ was pointed towards the shop and therefore could have had nothing to do with the dead lawn. The fact that his breath could knock out a draft horse was considered, but enough doubt had been introduced that the Rooty Boys decided to continue their search. A search which quickly uncovered more evidence: This looked to be a sure bet as to the real culprit. After all, who could dispute that the cats are nothing but trouble and this one was sitting right in the middle of the ‘blast zone’. However, Oboe immediately claimed that he had just recently sat down there to rest after a prolonged butterfly chasing session. While “it was like this when I got here” is often anything but true, Jack quickly backed up his claim by saying “Hi, Kiggyhihhg”. That was good enough for the Rooty Boys. Jack’s word is bond, as we all know. It seemed that Josh would be doomed to never know the true source of his crappy looking lawn. But just as things looked their bleakest a new clue arrived via some sort of CSI/DNA/FBI/QWERTY thing that this storyteller didn’t have time to think up a name or reasonable explanation for: Case closed. North, stay off my damn lawn! “Yeah, North” says Griffen as he takes a wizz right in the middle of the dead spot, “Stop killing the lawn with your dog…..er….baby pee.” Good times around here. Jack was very generous with his meatloaf the other night and Griffen, for the first time, thought that having a baby around might be okay. Larger glorious HD version right here. Filed under: Animals and Jack Comments: 1 Comment |

As we all know, Griffen has a nasty habit of wrecking his nails. So to try and avoid even more vet bills, we got him a set of Ruff-Wear boots at REI for when he goes hiking with his friends. The first time we put them on, he wasn’t exactly thrilled. But once he was out on the trail, they actually worked pretty well. Which is good, because at $60, they weren’t cheap. Though much cheaper than the previously mentioned vet bills.
