So when we arrived at The Watertown last night for the Knut Bell show, we were greeted by one of the all-time great northwest icons…..The Rainer Beer “R”. The “R” used to be perched atop the Rainer brewery in downtown Seattle. Along with the Kingdome, it was one of the first landmarks you saw if you drove into Seattle from the south. And most everyone who grew up in the northwest can remember all the great Rainer commercials of the 80’s. But in the late 90’s, the brewery and Rainer brand were sold in a multi company swap. The brewery building itself would later be purchased by another NW drinking icon, Tully’s Coffee. Who would replace the giant red “R” with a equally giant green “T”. I never gave much thought to where the “R” went, though it had passed through my head once or twice that it would have been a neat thing to get your hands on. Apparently I wasn’t the only one, because someone now owns the “R” and had it in the back of his nice red older Ford f250. I’m not sure who the guy is, but he was a friend of Knut and the guys. They said something about trying to bring Rainer back to the northwest and that there was a “Rememberrainer.com’ website. The guy even said something about he and a buddy filming some new “classic” commercials. I tried the website, and it doesn’t go anywhere. But I did get a neat Rainer button and a keychain from him. Rainer Beer returning to the Northwest is an interesting thought. I can’t see that it would ever happen. After all, who would buy it? But say a company like Redhook decided to bring Rainer under it’s roof as a low-cost, but classic Northwest brand. Might be interesting. Not likely to happen however. EDIT (May 1, 05): I just had a phone call from my friend Nicole. She said that she had a long talk with the guy who drives the “R” truck around when he stopped into her coffee stand for a drink. And this “R” is not the original “R”, that one is in a museum somewhere. This one is an exact replica. He also told her to go to his website, and she can’t get it to work either. Posted info about wedding gifts up at the Wedding Blog. I hate the idea that people feel like they HAVE to give a gift just because we invite them to the wedding. That is retarded. If someone is invited, it’s because we want them to come. If they would like to give us a gift, that’s great. If not, that’s great too. Filed under: Josh's random life Comments: None |

Here’s a realy good adidas commercial. It’s directed by Spike Jonze the bmx/skate photog/filmer turned hollywood actor/director/royalty. It’s a pretty damn neat concept for a commercial. I really like GOOD commercials. They have the opportunity to be well done short art pieces (or comedy, or drama, etc). The sad part is that they so rarely are. Andrew has been nuts for the band bright eyes “So if you want to be with me Those are lyrics from “First Day of My Life” which is off their newest album “I’m wide awake, It’s Morning”. In all honesty, I think those are some of my favorite ‘love’ lyrics I have ever heard. Sure everybody wants to win the lottery and find that Hollywood fairy-tale love story. But the real world isn’t like that. Real love is like saving money by working for a paycheck, you put in your energy and build something huge with hard work and lots of time. Many people are afraid of the hard work in the world, and so they just sit around feeling sorry for themselves because they are so lonely. I guess I was just lucky to have had people to teach me some of the important things in life. Amazing really, since I’m a moron. Here is a link to IFILM where you can watch the really simple but really neat video for “First Day of My Life”. Filed under: Josh's random life Comments: 1 Comment |

First BBQ of the season. I had organic beef because I’m a badass. Tony took control of the cooking, Lars got the BBQ going, Stacey Andy and I just sat around and enjoyed the food. Well…..Stacey actually took a nap until right before it was time to eat, then made a ‘timely’ appearance with plate in hand. Filed under: Friends and Josh's random life Comments: None |

Here’s a really neat article on someone’s blog: The super cool thing is that I recognize all of the people/skits that he talks about. God damn I love that show. I should watch it today. Filed under: Things I love Comments: None |

Every time I hang out with them, I am reminded about how cool my grandparents are. At 82, they are still going real strong. My grandfather bicycles 2-300 miles a week and volunteers in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. My grandmother goes to exercise class 4-5 times a week, is learning to paint again, and still has the energy to make me all sorts of crazy no-salt foods every time I visit. I went to my grandma’s painting class when I was in Florida. And it’s really neat to hear her talk about the art she is trying to make. What’s even more cool, is the fact that she really is pretty talented. There’s no way I could paint the way she does. The best part is that she is pushing herself to learn more and more as she does. She’s not just content to paint as something to do to pass the time. Recently, she has been experimenting with the “glob paint on for texture” style of acrylic/oil. And even though it seems a little strange for her (I think she started in watercolors) she’s charging ahead and getting better and better. It’s really pretty encouraging. I hope that I live my life like my grandparents do when I’m older. Filed under: Family Comments: None |

I had a great time at SER with Greg, Kyle, Tim and everyone else. But special thanks must be given to Jack Ringca. I had a wonderful time hanging out with him all weekend. He is a great traveling companion and intelligent conversationalist. He can argue a point with conviction, but isn’t afraid to admit when he is wrong. He is a stunning yoyo player, but is happy to teach something as basic as the “sleeper” to anyone who asks. He is great with kids who I would have lost patience with long ago and he makes everyone feel like they have been his friend for years. He deserves all that he gets from Duncan and the rest of the yoyo world. He’s a very cool guy, and I’m proud to call him my friend. DISS KINGS RULE ALL. Photos and a small report from the 2005 South-East Regional yoyo contest are up in the “Toys” section. CLICK HERE Super big thanks to Kyle, Greg (and Jane), Tim, Jack, Matt, Chuck, Ben, Hiro, and everyone else who’s name I forgot or who I just met for making the weekend so fun. Also, the “toys” section actually works now. Though there is nothing there but the SER contest until I get home. I will be adding the 2005 PNW and the 2004 Worlds yoyo contest photo pages there as well after I get back from Florida. Filed under: Toys and Yo-yoing Comments: 1 Comment |
