The Boss is back
Posted on 05.31.06 by Josh Root @ 11:02 am

I like Bruce Springsteen’s music. Or rather…I like some of his music. Some of it (particularly recently) gets to be a little high-brow political-concept for me. He sort of falls into the Dylan trap of talking in too esoteric of terms about his music. Which is odd considering the “working class hero” reputation that he forged for himself in the 80’s. In any case, I like a lot of his older music. “Born To Run” is easily on my Top 20 Rock Songs list, maybe even top 10. But his recent stuff hasn’t interested me. However, “We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions” is a tribute to Pete Seeger. “That guy sucks,” you say “I hate that stupid Silver Bullet Band”. No…you are thinking of Bob Seger, and he does suck unless you are in a trashy bar two pitchers into their “$1 PBR pitcher night”.

The name may not ring a bell, but he wrote a lot of songs (”Where Have All the Flowers Gone”, “If I Had a Hammer” etc) that were recorded and turned into hits by many other bands. This is in addition to being fairly popular himself, from what I can gather. In general, he is thought of as a guy who sung a lot of American historical folk songs and civil rights/etc protest songs (Seeger Wikipedia page here). In any case, the new Springsteen album isn’t a cover album so much as it is a tribute album. The songs aren’t Seeger’s “hits” so much as they are folk songs that Seeger sung and appriciated. And in fact, songs that Seeger saved from obscurity in the face of the growth of rock & roll.

I’ll be honest and say that if I heard these songs sung by Seeger himself, I probably wouldn’t care so much. And it’s not that Springsteen is somehow a better musician or singer, but rather that he took all of these singer/guitar songs and turned them into the type of song that you would hear at a pub or family event where a bunch of musicians were gathered to play. The whole thing was recorded with very little multi-tracking (just backing vocals as far as I can tell). Essentially, it was just Bruce with his guitar, two fiddle players, a accordian, a banjo, another guitar, a percussionist, and a three piece brass section of trumpet/trombone/sax. They all crammed into a huge farmhouse and recorded the whole thing on a couple takes (spread out over a few years). The video below shows the recording session quite well, it is part of a 30 minute DVD that is on the flip side of the CD.

While I still don’t like listening to Bruce ramble on in his funny little hat, he makes a number of very good points during the DVD. These are great songs that are in danger of being lost, as all music is if it isn’t taken and “remade” every so often. And there is something very powerful and engaging about the idea of people getting together to play music where ever they might be. Not worrying about amps or effects processors or even playing for anyone other than themselves. It’s something that I hope to have in my life again someday.

Larger version HERE, though since it’s youtube, it won’t look much better. There is also another good video on Amazon’s page for this album.

A retaining pond runs through it
Posted on 05.28.06 by Josh Root @ 9:51 am

Stacey and I finished our little fly fishing class the other week. Two evenings of learning about bugs and streams, and one morning of learning to cast in the “casting pond” behind the Pacific Fly Fishers shop.

Learning to cast.

We’ve only been out a couple times since then, as our life has been dominated by the yard and various other random junk. As we still don’t really know what we are doing, there have been no fish caught yet. But as far as I can tell, flyfishing is a great way to spend a day not catching fish.

Most streams open up in Washington June 1st, so that will be pretty neat. We will probably head over to Leavenworth/Cashmere and camp on Icicle Creek. There are supposed to be some small but fun trout up there.

Cat Update.
Posted on 05.18.06 by Josh Root @ 8:35 am

Here’s an update on the mess of animals we have at our house.

Tuba is recovering quite nicely. Within days of being back, he was up and around again. In fact, we couldn’t keep him inside for even a week. He limps a little on the foot that was broken, but must be doing fine as he caught a bird the other day. The photo below is of the bruising on his belly a day or two after he got back.

Bruises from being run over.

He and Oboe (the new cat) are getting along pretty well. Oboe pesters him a lot, but it’s pretty cute watching them play together. Tuba is quite gentle considering how much bigger he is than Oboe. The first photo I posted of Tuba and Oboe didn’t really show the size difference between them. This is a better example (though Oboe has grown since then).

Big cat, little cat.

Tuba and Jo-Jo (the three legged cat) still aren’t getting along very well. She is a real pain in the ass as a pet in most normal cases, and in this particular case, she is being even worse. She hisses at him when he tries to play or sleep with her, runs away, etc. Sort of like dating in high school I guess. The really annoying part of all that is that Tuba is bent out of shape, so he has been marking his territory more often. Now I don’t care what he does outside, but when he sprays my computer screen, that’s too much. I was about ready to make cat stew last night. I don’t live life so that cats can pee on my stuff. That is completely unacceptable. So Stacey is going to the vet today to see if there is a solution to the problem. My solution is to give cats away.

Anyone want some cats?

2 trips to Sea-Tac, 2 trips back home.
Posted on 05.13.06 by Josh Root @ 10:12 am

So we are now 0 for 2 in successful departures from Sea-Tac. On Thursday, bad weather and related delays were to blame for our not being able to get to Vermont. Yesterday, it was a bad engine actuator.

After getting up at 4am for a 7:30am flight, we got to Sea-Tac and checked in with plenty of time. We snaked our way through one of the longest security check lines I’ve ever seen (though, to be fair, it moved pretty quickly), and arrived at the gate. Only to be greeted with a “flight delayed until 8:30am” sign. An 8:30 departure would only give us 20 minutes to de-board the plane and hustle across Washington Dulles to the departure gate for our connecting flight to Burlington. The United gate agents assured us that we could make it, as they promised that the departure gate would be on the same concourse as our arrival gate in Dulles. Though I didn’t really believe it, we decided that we would go for it as long as the plane really did depart at 8:30. Our last resort was to wait 5 hourse in Dulles to catch the late commuter flight to Burlington. Though the gate agent described the seating on that flight as “tight”.

Peter & Lisa had a baby.
Posted on 05.12.06 by Josh Root @ 11:01 am

Slightly old news, but still pretty cool.

Our friends Peter and Lisa had their first child last month. Maddy is very little and very cute. These photos were taken when she was 4-5 days old, she is 7ish weeks old now.

Congrats to them.

the colors are bad news on this map

See the death storm in the middle of the map? That is why my mother and I could not get to Vermont today. Everything going in and out of Chicago was delayed hours and hours. If we had stayed at Sea-Tac, we would have been sitting there for 5 hours. And from the sounds of it, up to three of those hours could have been sitting in the plane on the tarmac going nowhere. As it was, I called United on the phone, rescheduled for tomorrow, and we drove home. I guess it could have been much worse, at least I wasn’t stuck somewhere trying to get home. I am kind of bummed that I had to waste a day of this trip. It’s a short trip anyway, and it’s not like I get to see Andrew that often.

It was kind of an odd afternoon though. Sort of like a weird dream, since I knew I wasn’t supposed to be here today. But still, I got some stuff done that I didn’t have time to finish yesterday. And I scared the crap out of Stacey when she came home from work. So that was good times.
