all you Washingtonians are just looking for the perfect excuse to come visit Per, Anya, Gretchen, and me in Boston right? am I right? you know that I am right… that being said, a new beta web-service, Farecast, was just launched that plots the cost trends of flights out of Seattle and Boston. it uses highly nerdy math to predict if the consumer should buy a ticket now, or if the ticket will drop in the near future. esentially a way to take some of the guess work out of the old “when should i buy” conundrum. i have yet to spend much time exploring the site, but if it works, it will be awfully handy. as of right now the site is just in its beta testing phase, but lucky for most BR readers, the two outbound cities you can choose from are Seattle and Boston. so by now I am sure that most of you have heard the saga of our dear friend Mr. Brian Morrison. he ran 100 miles at Western States this weekend and kicked some serious ass, crossing the finish line 12 minutes before the next closest runner. unfortunately Brian was disqualified from the race less than 200 meters from the finish-line due to serious medical issues that came about as a result of running non-stop for 18 effing hours in the 100 degree heat. he was helped to his feet by his two pacers, Scott Jurek and Jason Davis, and brought over the finish line in direct route to the medical tent. due to this aid, the higher-ups at Western States were not able to honor Brian’s winning time, regardless of the extraneous circumstances that had befallen him so close to the finish.
all that being said, i just wanted to take this opportunity to publicly congratulate Brian on an amazing race. i bitch and moan if i have to drive 100 miles in my air-conditioned car, so i could not even fathom trying to run that distance. Brian may not have officially “won” the race, but that means nothing. only a guy as committed, dedicated, and hard-working as he could have finished with such an amazing time, and i have no doubt in my mind that he has the drive and skill to win Western States and every other race he sets his mind to. i also want to thank Scott Jurek and Jason Davis for having the foresight, kindness, and intelligence to realize that Brian’s health, life, and wellbeing far outweighed an official “win”. i think i speak for all of Brian’s friends and family when i say that we are all indebted to their quick thinking and decisive actions. it is inspiring to know that he has such a dedicated crew on his side. that being said, Brian you are a champ and we are all proud of you. from marathon #1 (remember that, Thanksgiving 2000 right?) til now, you have done nothing but kick ass. keep it up kid. and when those free Montrail shoes are flowing like wine, don’t forget that i wear a size 8. (for more info on brian’s race, check out this interview he did with Competitor Magazine) Filed under: Friends Comments: 5 Comments |

T-Ball is now my #1 favorite sport. Way better than any of that crap you watch on TV where rich whiners complain about how they aren’t respected enough. Half the t-ball kids don’t have any idea what is going on, the other half gets distracted every 45 seconds. Everybody gets to bat, the game is only three innings, and nobody keeps score. I’m thinking about sponsoring a team next year. It would just say *Root* on their caps.

Our good friend Josh Sternberg is back in town for a few days. He’s taking a break from his usual pastime of not-getting-killed in Iraq. So to celebrate, we went to the Brown Lantern for open mic night. Just to prove that I could be a cool open-mic guy also, I brought my ukulele down and played along with the same five songs that Josh always plays there. He’s got a good thing going though, since we’re always so happy to see him alive and healthy that nobody cares what he plays. And he smartly waits until 11:30 or so when we’ve all had a couple beers and most anything sounds good (except for the guy before us who sang a long song about his underwear and “Going Commando!”).

Despite what Andrew might tell you, not all who grace the pages of the BR blog love Tofu Croquettes. In the past 48 hours, Tuba has brought four birds into the house. Two were alive, and we successfully took them away and released them. The third was missing its head, and the fourth (pictured above) was missing everything but it’s feet and a few feathers. Good thing Tuba saved all his hunting energy by not catching mice. Filed under: Animals Comments: 7 Comments |

so our good friend Brian Morrison is running in the 100-mile Western States Race today. I may be wrong, but i do believe that he is favored to win. and whether or not he wins is somewhat of a moot point. cause after all, the kid is running 100-effing miles! so that being said, you can track Brian’s progress throughout the day today (in real-time) by clicking HERE. send him your positive thoughts. and last night was oodles of fun. a big thank-you to Andrea and Katrina who organized a little secret going-away shindig for me. you guys are great and will be missed! boston is just a short drive away tho!
