Waterfalling Down
Posted on 05.31.07 by Josh Root @ 11:37 am

This photo reminds me that I have to pee.

Got up early this morning and hunted down this waterfall that is on a tributary of the Nooksack N. Fork. Pretty cool, it spills down into a great swimming hole. The local kids must agree, because there is a little rope swing already there. I was hoping to bushwack my way up above the falls and see if there was any cool pocket-water to fish. But the creek has carved itself a mighty canyon over the years, and access is really steep and sketchy. In any case, it was a beautiful way to spend a morning.

okay. here is the deal: we moved yesterday and don’t have the internet yet. it is a very primitive lifestyle. anyways, all will be resolved in the next few days when the internet is returned. but until then you’ll have to rely on Joshua’s posts and Kevin’s comments. good luck.

If it’s brown, drink it down.

Good water quality here in Bellingham.

So here’s what we woke up to coming out of the faucets this morning. Delightful huh? Stacey hunted around for information on the City of Bellingham website, and I guess this sort of thing happens in the spring when they flush the water mains. Seems like they could have warned us though.

Andrew is lazy.
Posted on 05.25.07 by Josh Root @ 9:56 am

I guess that since Andrew and I are in the same general area, he doesn’t think it’s necessary to post on the blog. Reinforcing my theory that the blog only exists so that he and I can let each other know what is happening in our lives. Apparently he doesn’t care about the rest of you. Anyway, here are a couple of random photos (and another gratuitous shot of me so Stacey doesn’t forget what I look like).

Ash wishes Andrew could throw the frisbee further. Chin stroking night at the bar.

Mike tries not to laugh at my dart abilities. Workin 10-midnight, sitting in an Irish Pub

1. The local arboretum is the closest thing Ash gets to a dog park. Gretchen walks Ash down and meets Andrew on his way home from work. They make out and Andrew throws the frisbee for ash. What a happy family.
2. Last night we headed out for a couple of beers. Andrew had a tough day of fixing the world’s troubled children and wanted to have a talk with his mentor “Sam Adams” about it.
3. Gretch left early, but Per, Andrew, and I hung out and played a bunch of darts with our new buddy Mike and some of the people from his softball team. Mike is good at darts, I am not.
4. Here is a shot of me at work in DC last weekend. Telecommuting tastes better with a pint of the dark stuff. No real reason to include it, I just thought it was a good self portrait.

Go go gadget copter!

Gretchen shows us her kitchen dance. Subway isn't just a crappy sub shop.

Yes, yes. This is a long post. I arrived in Boston on monday after and uneventful flight. Andrew and Gretch (and Per & Anya) have a cool apartment, which everyone knows from various BR posts. My mom and Warren were still here, so we got to hang out for a few hours. Boston is good times. I still have my original opinion from my first visit that it feels like a much bigger Portland, Or.

Big fluffy dogs are cool, and friendly. The battery was dead, so we push started the helicopter.

I have gotten to spend a little time with Philip Greenspun. Who is, among other things, the creator of photo.net. Plus, he has a couple really cool dogs. One of whom (Alex) I have looked at photos of for almost 10 years now. So it was fun to finally meet him. Yesterday evening, I wandered over to Philip’s house near Harvard, and we had dinner with another of my photo.net co-workers, Hannah Thiem.

The pilot has turned off the 'fasten seatbelt' sign. I think those boats are throwing a tea party.

Today, Philip took me for a ride in his Robinson R44 helicopter. I have to say, this was hell of a lot of fun. I had never been in a helicopter before, and flying around Boston with no door (so I could shoot photos) was a blast. Hooray for Philip and his aviation assistant Kasim, who did most of the flying since he is trying to log hours towards his certification. A big thanks to them.

Andrew looks so pretty from up here. Look mom, I could be falling out!

The arrow is pointing at Andrew’s house in Jamaica Plain. I’m pretty sure the arrow didn’t do much damage when it smashed into the second story. There is another photo below showing Jamaica Pond and Jamaica Plain’s location in relation to downtown Boston. Good times all around!

Andrew controls all of this area with his drug gang. Some baseball team plays here I guess. 'The Fenways' I think.

Thar She Blows!

I may be a vegan, but there is something very compelling to me about the life of a fisherman/crabberdude. Maybe it is my PacNW upbringing. Or maybe it was the 14 hours of Deadliest Catch that Wren & I watched last year. Who knows. Either way: Corey Arnold is on Deadliest Catch and he takes good pictures. And he has a cat. What more could you ask for?

Here is a lil’ feature he did for FecalFace. Neat stuff.

Dateline: George Bush’s hood
Posted on 05.20.07 by Josh Root @ 7:58 pm

It's like they are still British subjects or some such shit. How lame. Awwwwwww....YEAH! I love me some Pancreas Club.

Washington DC is on the lower end of my favorite East Coast cities list. It just seems like the place is filled with jackhole political wonks or the marginalized members of the blue collar service industry. The city is a mess of expensive restaurants and hotels surrounded by boarded up ghetto buildings. I dunno, just not my favorite place. Which isn’t saying much, since I’m not a huge fan of cities in general or the east coast in specific. Although I do love the motto on the license plates here.

I’m in DC to help a buddy out running the audio visual support for a medical conference. The larger conference is the Digestive Disease Week. And my smaller subset was the Pancreas Club. You though clubs were just for old men who played golf? Well yes, but these old (and young) men (and women) also work on keeping people from dying of pancreatic cancer.

In any case, it’s been a decent couple of days. Since I’m working, I don’t have to pay for anything, so that’s cool. We’re staying at a nice little hotel right downtown, the Morrison Clark. It’s a funky older building that sort of ends up feeling like some of the hotels that Andrew, Tony, and I stayed in while traveling in Europe. I’ve had dinner twice at Matchbox, a “just trendy enough to be fun” downtown restaurant. Great food at decent prices. But $6 for a beer, ouch. Though I have to admit, it was a very good beer.

Right now, I am sitting at the unimaginatively named Irish pub Fadó stealing their internet and eavesdropping on other people’s conversations. So far, the people have nothing interesting to say. Just a bunch of drunk businessmen and couples making first-date small talk.

These last two photos are for my beautiful wife Stacey since she wanted to see how I looked in the tie she picked out for me. Yeah, that’s right, I can wear a tie. Who knew?

This is a picture of a magic mirror showing the prettiest person in the land. You want to get in this door? You'll have to get past my smile first.

Goodbye to more local knowledge.
Posted on 05.20.07 by Josh Root @ 6:03 am

This looks like a bad sign.

In what has become the dark side of the internet mail-order revolution, another small town store is going out of business. H&H Anglers is/was the fishing and hunting store here in Bellingham. It was a quality place with decent prices and a lot of years of local knowledge. It’s not like I was a long time customer, or even a big spender. But I did enjoy shopping there and specifically tried to make sure that my fly-fishing $$ got spent with them. But apparently the money just wasn’t there. Between the internet and stores like G.I. Joes, the small fishing store is going the way of the local bookstore, camera store, and record shop.

The coolest thing about a local store is the knowledge and experience you get from the people who run the place. It’s the sort of thing that makes paying a little more worth the trouble. To say nothing of the fact that you can go in and handle the stuff that you are looking to buy. My problem is that once I know a lot about a subject (cameras for example), I don’t need anyone in local store to give me any advice. Nor do I really need to hold a particular piece of gear in my hands. I know what Canon lens I want and I know what it is going to look and feel like. So I have a hard time convincing myself to pay that 10-20% premium in price.

But this is exactly what drives the small stores out of business. I dunno, it’s easy to talk about ‘buying local’ in theory, and in some situations it’s easy to put in practice. But who can say that they are able to always stick to their guns on the subject. Now that I live away from Watermark, I have found myself buying more books from Amazon. Mostly because I haven’t gotten around to finding a good Bellingham bookstore. And hey, the Amazon books show up on my door in two days. *sigh* A sinner I am.
