Well I was going to make a post about Ben and Katrina’s visit yesterday. But I thought this picture of Stacey shaving a cat was much more important. Yes, Tuba got in another fight. His tail is infected. What crazy lives us married people lead! I promise exciting B & K related photos tomorrow…Unless some other weird animal related event occurs (and Griffen getting air-humpy when Ben was petting him doesn’t count…though it was weird. But who doesn’t get excited about Ben J?). Filed under: Animals Comments: 3 Comments |

As folks probably know, Andrew and I are a big fans of the dying art of newspaper comic strips. And one of the more annoying aspects of comic strips, and one of the reason that “dying” is an accurate adjective, is that newspapers hold on to old strips far longer than they should. Peanuts, Herman, Family Circus, Wizard of ID, Frank and Ernst, etc. Some of these comics are on their third artist and are decades past when they stopped being funny. With the limited amount of page space that today’s newspapers have for comic strips, it is pathetic to see moldy unfunny crap taking up space that could be given to newer more interesting comics. Garfield is a particularly bad example of this. Back in the 60’s/70’s, Peanuts was a funny, biting, and sarcastic look at the world through the eyes of a bunch of giant-head tiny-feet kids. Yes, by the mid-80’s it was just sappy drivel, but at least it started strong. Garfield, by comparison, has rarely ever been funny. But here it is, still plugging along 30 years later making the same jokes about Mondays, diets, and lasagna. The biggest change in 30 years? Jon seems to have gone from gay to straight. His “friend” Lyman disappeared in 1988, leaving his dog Odie behind and in 2007 Jon started dating his cat’s veterinarian Dr. Liz Wilson. My buddy Greg Cohen changed my whole opinion of Garfield when he showed me the website “Garfield Minus Garfield”. The whole comic is improved 1000% by simply removing the main character. The strips become absurdest along the same vein and Maakies and the rest of the comics you find in the back of the Stranger. Perhaps it is my oddball sense of humor, but I find the minus-Garfield comics hilarious. EDIT: I see I am one day late on this post as the Comics Curmudgeon made a note about Garfield Minus Garfield yesterday. Filed under: Comic Strips Comments: 2 Comments |

So for the past few months, Griffen has returned from one of his rare wintertime backyard journeys with these horrible burrs in his face and fur. They were awful to get out and seemed to be covered with all sorts of velcro hooks. We didn’t have any idea where they were coming from, and frankly we were too scared to go look. But while I was bleaching out a trashcan on the side of the house the other day, I happened to notice the dead plant in the photo above with it’s many burrs waiting to strike at unsuspecting sweatshirts and dog beards. Any have any idea what this devil plant is called? Why does it hate our dog so much? *Points that are won may be redeemed (+ a $3 handling fee) at any time for a free latte. Or, you can cram it with walnuts, ugly. Filed under: Animals Comments: 10 Comments |

This comic (brought to my attention by Saxtor) is a very accurate encapsulation of the type of people I spend all day dealing with. PN has a couple hundred thousand of these know-it-alls posting 20,000 forum messages a week. Good times! Ah well, it’s not like I’m any better. At least I’m always correct when I post though. The b-ham crew joined up at TCH for some tasty margaritas to celebrate the impending birthdays. Good times were had by all, hearty food was eaten, and feats of strength were preformed. We then headed on a long and loud walk downtown (I think most of the loud was my fault) and had a few beers at the good old Beav. I then walked home and fell asleep. The weather was gorgeous on my birthday so Stacey and I headed up to the Middle Fork and Cleeeeeerwater to check them out in the wintertime. Griffen enjoyed the remaining snowpiles and I wished I could go fishing. I love how the weather always gets nice for a few days between Davidson’s birthday and mine. It’s like a winter gift from the sun goddess (or from GOD, the weather channel, or the snowbeavers, depending on your religion). Speaking of birthday stuff. Clarity and a very smiley Caspian (no, he isn’t smiling in the photo, he was busy wondering what I was doing) stopped by the other day to bring me a big pile of homemade birthday bagels. I am a very lucky guy and Clarity is a wonderful friend. Thank you Clarity. Filed under: Josh's random life Comments: 2 Comments |

So I’m getting frustrated with my HTC Mogul cell phone. It doesn’t do what Sprint it claimed it would do (bluetooth, GPS, EVDO Rev A) and Sprint’s “fixes” for the phone seem to be getting pushed further and further back. So I’m thinking of doing what I should have done in the first place, which is to buy an iPhone (trying out Davidson’s iPod Touch this weekend just reminded me of this further). The iPhone: -Would sync with my mac However the iPhone also: -Is very expensive Do any of our friends have At&t/Cingular for their cell phone in Washington state? How is the coverage? Back when At&t and Cingular merged the FIRST time, I was an At&t customer and switched to Cingular’s GSM service. The coverage was so bad that I canceled and moved to Sprint. Sprint’s coverage uses the same system as Verizon and is considered to be very good in the PNW. Now, my first adventure with GSM was three years and two mergers back now. So they might be improved now. But I’m not willing to get half a bar of service in my own house like I did the first time just so I can have an iphone. One nice thing about going to GSM is that it makes it easy to have multiple phones for different purposes. I could pop the SIM card out of the iPhone and put it in a cheap flip phone for when I go fishing. Would be a lot nicer than losing a $400 iPhone because I was trying to call Stacey and tell her about a fish I caught. Filed under: Josh's random life and Toys Comments: 12 Comments |
