Weekend of fun, lifetime of terror
Posted on 04.29.08 by Josh Root @ 1:50 am

Look at my teeth! We almost look like doctors on a day off.
-clink-! Happy end of season! Sure, I'll grab your wiener buddy.

Stacey let me out of the house this weekend for some adventures before Jack shows up in a few weeks. Saturday I headed to the S. Fork of the Nooksack with my buddy Ed. He’s been teaching me to row a driftboat and it was a beautiful sunny day for a lesson. River flows were way low at 500 cfs. But there were still plenty of logs, boulders, downed trees and other hazards for me to practice maneuvering around.

Later that afternoon I headed to Avalon for a round of golf with Josh Sternberg and his brother in law Riley. Golf was fun, but I sure suck at that sport. Once Lars moved away, I didn’t have anyone to regularly play with. And without someone to say “Come on buddy, let’s get out there” it’s hard for me to get excited about spending $35 to walk around by myself.

Sunday was the last day at Baker this season. Davidson, Myke and I rallied up for one last day of slush sliding. And slushy it was. A perfect spring day, except for the fact that the skies were cloudy like it was October. A comparison made all the more accurate when it started to rain. But no matter, Smooth provided beer and bbq in the parking lot, there was plenty of fun riding, and I finally saw Schmoli up at Baker this season. Good times.

Fly the Friendly Skies
Posted on 04.27.08 by Andrew @ 7:51 am

Florida was great. It was wonderful to see Grandmother and the weather couldn’t have been better. However, despite arriving at the airport an hour early, we are currently in purgatory as we missed our flight due to JetBlue’s incompetence at the check-in desk. Now we are bumped to standby on a flight that is full and we will likely be living out the remainder of our days at the scenic Orlando airport. Awesome. Please have our mail forwarded.

I’d like to thank JetBlue for all their stunning inability to do anything competently.

***Update 1***
It is now 1:20est and we arrived this morning at 9:30est. Our original flight left at 10:40est and we were unable to get standby on a flight that just left at 1:10est. Our next attempt is at 3:05. We’ll see how well that works out.

***Update 2***
Well, it is 3:05pm and no standby passengers made it on to that flight. So we are still sitting at MCO with no end in sight. The next flight leaves at 5:00pm and we continue to be on the top of the list. However, we were informed that all the flights to Boston are already booked for today and tomorrow. The gate agent stated that we may be stuck until Wednesday. Yes, Wednesday. Hmmm.

***Update 3***
Alright. This isn’t going well. It is 5:00pm and I have been at the airport for the past 7.5 hours. There was one standby seat on the last flight and it went to Gretchen. We figured that it was better that one of us made it and since she has her final day of school and a corresponding presentation tomorrow, I volunteered to stick around Orlando. So now I wait. I wait to see if I can get a seat on the final flight of the evening at 9:20pm. If I don’t get that, then I either sit at the airport all night, or go pay ridiculous airport Hilton prices to sleep on a bed. Tough call. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to such a decision. At this point I feel a bit like Tom Hanks in that one movie. You know, the one where he is stuck in an airport terminal. And he can’t leave the terminal. Cause if he leaves the terminal, then he gets into trouble. But while in the terminal he falls in love with Catherine Zeta-Jones. I think the movie was called “Blue Chips”. Help.

***Update 4***
So. How about that Orlando airport eh? I am rounding the bend on my 11th hour in this place and let me tell you a few things:

1). There is little to no vegan food here.
2). Beer is expensive. $6.91 for a pint of Sam Adams.
3). I hope I make this 9:20pm flight.
4). Did I mention that beer is $6.91?
5). Really hope I make this flight.

If you get another update from me, it means I will be bedding down on the lovely and stained pastel carpet of MCO. If you don’t hear from me again, it means that the airlines gods have decided that I’ve been punished enough and allowed me to return to my home. We shall see.

***Update 5***
It is now 12:35am and I AM HOME. A mere 12 hours after arriving at Orlando International I managed to get the one (and only) seat on the final plane of the evening. I truly feel for the other two MCO warriors whom I left behind, still fighting to find their way out of the seven levels of JetBlue hell. Stay strong my friends. Stay strong. …and on that note, I am going to bed.

Postman Cometh
Posted on 04.24.08 by Andrew @ 6:07 pm

Although my posting has been sporadic, there has been much going on in the east-coast offices of BrothersRoot. Trips and visits aplenty. However, due to this constant string of goodtimes, I am somewhat behind chronologically in my sharing. So let us go back a few days and relive some of the Boston fun that occurred when Mike came to town. Nice to have him back in the land of baked beans and Caden.

Who doesn’t love slightly spoiled food?
Posted on 04.23.08 by Josh Root @ 10:20 am

Sunshine on my mayo, makes me happy.

I love me some discount grocery stores! And we’ve got three of them up here in Bellingham.

Store #1: Grocery Outlet
A somewhat boring spot with no real deals. More like a ghetto supermarket instead with coolers and whatnot. Nothing too interesting, useful, or cheap.

Best deal: Those Asian noodle bowl type things that stacey likes from time to time. Or frozen dinners.
Sketchiest choice: The prepackaged meat from god-knows-where.

Store #2: Sunshine Liquidators
Lots of mainstream, but slightly outdated, stuff. Food is decently priced, though skews towards the Safeway/Haggen choices. Good selection of household stuff as well.

Best Deal: Toothpaste is wicked cheap and there is more candy than you can shake a stick at. So those two go well together.
Sketchiest Choice: The mayonnaise or salad dressing that has been cooking outside in the sun (see photo).

Store #3: Deals Only
Bellingham’s OG food outlet, the Russian mafia controlled Deals Only. There is more weird stuff here than you can imagine. Lots of it seems to come from health food stores, so that is cool. But the outdating is pretty bad. It’s easy to find stuff with dates from the middle of ‘07. In fact, we could probably have a BR contest for who can find the most outdated treasure. But still, the selection is more varied, the prices better, and you are much more likely to find a treasure that you can’t get elsewhere. When you do, buy all you can. Like the time I bought 16 boxes of Raisin Mini-Wheats for 50 cents each. Those things are impossible to find.

Beast Deal: For me? Salt free ketchup or “nosalt” salt-sub. For you? Wheat Thins and Tarro chips by the bushel.
Sketchiest Choice: What isn’t sketchy here? I guess I’ll say badly dented canned food or anything missing a label.

Piece of Cake
Posted on 04.22.08 by Andrew @ 4:46 am

Lack of posting? You bet! A short trip to NYC this past weekend (pictures to follow) and another to Florida leaving on Wednesday has racked up the frequent flier miles, but done nothing for consistent interweb blogging.

However, where I fail, others may succeed. While in NYC I learned that a friend of mine, Jessica, has a wealth of knowledge about cakes that cannot be rivaled. And with all that aforementioned knowledge comes her delicious blog, Pictures of Cake. Worth a look for even the most casual of baked caloric intakers.

Three-armed Beyonce is not amused.

You only get a two arm wave, ugly peasants.

One of my favorite new blogs is Photoshop Disasters which chronicles all sorts of abominations created by art directors and graphic designers in both print and web media. Photoshop may be an amazing tool, but so are the people who wield it.

Currently this post and this post are tied for my favorite. You may have to look really closely at that second one to figure out the secret. But if you still can’t find the problem, this post should give you a hint.

Car fall down go boom!
Posted on 04.17.08 by Josh Root @ 7:24 am

We'll patch 'er up on the caution laps, get back out there. Crap parking job, no wonder it got hit.

About 3:30 yesterday afternoon I was working and Stacey was reading a book when we heard a huge -BANG- outside. It could have been some sort of construction nose, but I decided to take a look anyway. Looked through the blinds, saw the jetta wrecked and a truck pulling away.

I guess some gal was hauling ass through our neighborhood (like many people do each day) and somehow crashed into our parked car. It was some sort of late 80’s early 90’s gold or tan GMC pickup. And by the accounts of my neighbors, it was pretty messed up from the crash. When you look at the photos, remember that the Jetta was parked along the curb. The impact shot it forward about 6 feet and out from the curb another 5-6 feet. But nobody got the full license plate and the person didn’t stick around to apologize. Sped off, passed the SUV in front of her, and ran the red light down the street. The nice gal in the SUV circled around and gave a partial plate number, but the cops weren’t sure if they could figure it out from that.

Such is life. Nobody was hurt, at least nobody I’m aware of. The Jetta has full insurance. And we have an extra vehicle. The really funny thing is, there was a traffic calming meeting last night down at city hall about our neighborhood. I guess life wanted me to have a couple pictures to bring along.

Let’s play some pong, dude!
Posted on 04.16.08 by Josh Root @ 12:54 pm

I'll take a dozen ping-pong balls & a jug of Nyquil.

As I was standing in Walgreens yesterday, I found myself staring at a big rack of ping pong balls. It seemed like a strange item for them to have a whole rack dedicated to. But then I remembered that I live in a college town.

Go Vikings!
