Our friends Brian and Marni sure know how to make a cute baby. It was a lot of fun to see the three of them. Filed under: Baby related and Friends Comments: 2 Comments |

This is a sign on the road to my friends Brian & Marni’s house in Sturbridge, MA. What’s the deal here? Nevermind that referring to someone as “slow” went out in the 70’s. And ignore the missing “-ped” on the end of “handicap”. But did they really have to call the kid fat and lazy as well? Filed under: Josh's random life Comments: 4 Comments |

After all that with the FAA computers, my flight out to Boston was actually one of the least eventful I have had in recent memory. I didn’t sleep as much as I had hoped, but nobody ever does. Redeye flights are one of those things that are much better in concept than in practice. Thank you Stacey. It was a wonderful surprise this morning. Flying just seems to get worse and worse these days. I’m supposed to be leaving for Boston tonight to spend a couple days back at the NM “home office”. But now the news stations are reporting that a FAA flight plan computer went down and flights are not being able to file new flight plans. No flight plan filed = plane can’t leave. One interesting thing that came to my attention due to this mess is ireport.com. It seems to be the beginning of an organized effort to create news reports from people on the ground rather than traditional news reporters. Of course it’s owned by CNN, so who knows what the real motives are. But this guy is stuck in the Philly airport. Over the past 5 years I would say that 80-90% of my flights have had some sort of major problem. From the basic (overbooked) to the ludicrous (broken bathroom) I’ve had almost nothing but canceled/delayed/canceled/delayed. Thank god we bailed the airlines out with our tax dollars in 2001. Oh well, at least I’m sitting at home. That is a lot better than Andrew and Gretchen’s last crappy airline adventure. Filed under: Things I hate and Travels Comments: 1 Comment |

Above, you can see a photo of Dr. Jackyl at 3:01pm. Everything seems normal and happy with the good doctor. But then, not 45 minutes later, Dr. Jackyl takes his secret serum and turns into the terrible MR. ROOT! All shall suffer his wrath at not having enough milk in his tummy! A bit late I’ll admit, but tons of thanks nonetheless to both wonderful mothers who came to our rescue in Portland a couple weeks back to organize, paint, and spread joy. You two are the best! (ps. better pictures were taken, but not with my camera. dang.) Filed under: Family Comments: 1 Comment |

Super congrats to Hannah Elvrum and Barry Miller for getting hitched. The ceremony/reception was one of the very best that I’ve ever gone to. And I’m clocking in at 60+ weddings over the past 4 years or so. It helps that the Elvrums have a flat-out wonderful piece of property to hold an event like this. Quite frankly, that has much more to do with the hard work Janet and Flip (Filip?, I don’t think I’ve ever written his nickname before…) have put in over the years. They have made their home one of the most friendly and welcoming places I have had the pleasure of spending time. Every time I turn the corner into their driveway, I think to myself “You know, I’m REALLY glad to be here.” Stacey and I will consider ourselves amazingly lucky if we can ever create a space with the same warm feel to it. Hannah and Barry (and all the family members and friends) did a great job putting everything together. The event was very classy, yet low key and unstressful. You were welcome in a suit and you were welcome in flip-flops. Nicole and Maggie from Adrift provided a great meal, Tim Moffet handled creation of the “signature cocktail” mojitos all night, and HB wisely followed our lead for starting a successful marriage and had Spoonshine providing the dance grooves. There are a lot of couples who spend tens of thousands of dollars (even hundreds of thousands of dollars) more and can’t even come close to creating something as special as Hannah and Barry did. Well done you two. All the best from us. Filed under: Friends Comments: 5 Comments |

Though he has broken his computer and told it not to display Brothersroot.com, we wish him a happy birthday anyway. And a safe journey across the country. Hope that hippie van doesn’t break down. Filed under: Family Comments: 4 Comments |
