(SARCASM) Yes, I don’t like having fun any more (/SARCASM)

Thought bubble: how can I tire them out today?

There are never ever enough hours in the day with a baby in the house. Sure, in theory there are enough hours in the day to get everything done that you need to do, and perhaps even a few things you want to do. But it’s a razor balance. And all it takes is one bad feeding or one sleepless night, and your whole life is knocked into a tailspin. If you are lucky, things will straighten out over the next few days, but these things have a tendency to snowball and one sleepless night leads to a fussy baby which leads to tired parents which leads to unhappy baby which leads to bad feedings which lead to more sleepless nights.

I would say that Jack is a normal average baby in many ways (well, as normal as any child of mine could ever be). And by that I mean that we have an average number of problems and successes. He sleeps well often, except for the times he doesn’t. He eats well often, except for the times he won’t. He is in a good mood often, except for when he is inconsolable. Sure, we could have it better, and we could have it worse.

But still, we never ever get everything done that we need to. Not to mention the fact that we rarely get to do anything extra that we want to. But don’t worry, we hear about it all the time:

“You aren’t getting a season’s pass this year? What’s up with that?” - Between work and the baby, I never leave my house, that’s why. Unless you count trips to the store.

“How come you weren’t at my BBQ/party/birthday/shower/etc?” - Because all I could think about at 5am/11am/3pm/8pm was how badly I wanted to go to sleep.

“You don’t bring Jack around enough.” - Unless it’s from one of the very few people who has said “Hey, I’ll be happy to hold Jack if he starts screaming and I won’t make any negative comments on your parenting skills. Why don’t you go take a nap?” I don’t even want to hear this from anyone. It’s hard to feel welcome when people make you feel bad that your kid is screaming. It’s not like I want him to start screaming.

“You haven’t been fishing in 3 months? Pathetic!” - See answer #1

“Why didn’t you come to the mother-baby group?” - Well, Jack wouldn’t feed, then he pooped on me, then the cat threw up, then I ran out of diapers. By the time I dealt with all of that, it was 3 hours too late.

“I thought you said you were going to be in Anacortes/Seattle/Stanwood/MtVernon/etc today?” - Yeah, I thought I was too. But I’m just too exhausted. Or I have too much work. Or my wife/husband is upset.

And so on.

Every week we start out with the best of intentions: Mother/baby groups, dinner with friends, hikes with the dog, playdates, getting work done, visiting family, and maybe even an hour or two of golf or gardening or something fun. And every week we only get so far before things just fall out of orbit. And I’m sure somewhere somebody is sitting around saying to themselves “You know, if Josh and Stacey would just make the effort, they could have been here fishing/partying/visiting/playing/etc” Yeah? Well guess what? I’m making as much of an effort as I can. It’s the life of having a baby in the house. It is fascinating and interesting and wonderful and, quite frankly, we’re doing a great job as far as I am concerned. But it’s a tiring job that is filled with “Well, I guess we aren’t going to be able to do…” and “I really wish we could…”

You want to see more of me or Stacey or Jack or Griffen? Come by the house, we’re always home. But be prepared to say “You look tired, can I take care of Jack for a while? Don’t worry, if he screams I’ll deal with it. Go take that nap or get that work done.”

To everyone who has done that for us, you are worth your weight in gold. To everyone who isn’t interested, we understand, but you’ve got to be understanding with us as well. And to everyone who we haven’t gotten to see, we miss you and love you and we’re doing the best we can. But unless you are the one screaming in our face because your diaper is filled with poop, we’re probably going to end up dealing with the guy who is before we can make it to your house for a visit. Apologies all around and I promise to be as understanding when you have a baby.

Fivethirtyeight.com, a site for electoral nerds
Posted on 10.29.08 by Josh Root @ 9:17 am

fivethirtyeight.com wants to be your friend.

I’m way too concerned with the presidential election this year. For some reason I’m buying into the hype that this is a “crucial” election and that it matters more than previous years. With a couple wars, a global banking problem, a national and regional recession, and the general low opinion of the USA held worldwide, perhaps is does matter more. But in all honesty, I should probably be more interested in the Gregoire/Rossi contest for Washington State Gov than the presidential election. As that is going to have much more of an effect on my life over the next four years.

In any case, here’s a site I have been watching recently. Fivethirtyeight.com essentially takes all of the polling, opinion, and election info it can find, then uses it to present the most likely electoral vote results from the upcoming election. It looks at individual states and their backgrounds, how various groups are trending, what is and isn’t happening as far as campaign activity, and so on. They attempt to use scientific methodology to get accurate results from all of this (for example, looking at poll’s historical accuracy and weighing more accurate polls more heavily in results).

Though the site’s two main contributors are democratic leaning voters (they are open about that in the site’s FAQ) and currently support Barak Obama, their hope is that the site is more science than propaganda. But I guess if you are a McCain supporter, you are going to probably cry foul and say that the site is more supposed “liberal media bias”. If that’s the case, a good does of Fox News should calm you down.

Everyone, please go vote in this election. I would say “Please go for Barak Obama” but in reality, I just want people to vote. I have no patience for citizens who can’t be bothered to complete their responsibilities to the republic.

However, I’m still going to say it. Go vote for Obama. McCain is a crackpot who has sold his soul to the worst part of the republican party just for one last chance at the White House. Palin is an embarassment who isn’t qualified to run an IHOP, let alone be one heartbeat from the presidency.

Building a new office tower.

Slave labor is cheap. Jack and a bunny

Due to the distracting nature of having a 5 month old baby, and the small nature of our house, we have decided to frame in the “loft” part of the shop to make me an office. You might remember the shop from previous brothersroot episodes such as “Building Stairs” and “Climbing Wall“. Anyway, Lars has been helping me frame the office. And by “helping” I mean that he has been figuring out the whole project. My framing skills are limited (in the same way that my basketball dunking skills are “limited”), but I’m learning. The photo of Jack is just in there because I felt like putting a photo of Jack in there.

In other house news, I finally fixed the broken spigot. It turns out there there are these nifty little copper fittings that allow you to connect copper tubing without actually having to sweat the pieces together. I can sweat a pipe just fine, but I don’t do it very often so it’s kind of a PITA for me. Plus, I dislike using the blowtorch that close to parts of the house that can burn down (the spigot piping under the house wasn’t well planned out). The fittings go by the name of Sharkbite or Gatorbite depending on where you buy them. But essentially they have a set of compression teeth and a gasket that “bite” down on the pipe and seal the fitting. You can remove them if necessary and they come in a bunch of standard sizes.

Now, your contractor/plumber friends are going to laugh at you and tall you that crap like that is just for idiot homeowners. And they are right, the correct way to fix this would have been to cut the pipe back and rebuild it correctly, including sweating the pipes. But the fact is that these fittings are a great way to make a temporary or simple repair. Besides, the whole thing is going to have to get torn out when the main shut off valve for the house gets replaced. A project I hurried along by fixing the spigot since opening and closing the valve a couple times seems to have made it’s leaking even worse. The faucet is just in there because I also had to install a new sink faucet the other day. Leaking stuff is fun to fix.

Welcome to the glories of home ownership Andrew!

Put your hose here. Five bucks and no blowtorch.
This thing is in great shape! Yeah, it's a sink.

Traffic scoffaws re-routed
Posted on 10.19.08 by Josh Root @ 10:37 am

I will build a masterpiece! That's right, obey the sign.

We come to part three of the never ending traffic saga of King St (Part One & Part Two). The diversion is finally finished and it appears to be working. Virtually all of the commercial traffic has stopped driving up and down the street. There is still a decent chunk of lazy college kids and self absorbed SUV moms who drive around the diversion. But that number seems to be getting smaller as people learn and remember that the diversion is there.

Overall, I’m pretty stoked as are most of my neighbors. It’s really nice to not have cars flying up and down our narrow street just to skip the light on James/Alabama.

7 Signs? Pfft. I only count 3!
Posted on 10.12.08 by Andrew @ 11:04 pm

Now I am not a religious man, but you gotta admit there is something strange going on. First the collapse of the world economy, then there is a fiery torrent of hail in Bellingham, and now an intense locust attack in Portland. I sure hope the Apocalypse will have wi-fi or else posting is going to be awfully difficult.
