You know you are getting old and jaded when a new cereal at the grocery store makes you happy. But I’m glad to see that Dorset has made it over to this side of the pond (and brought it’s value pricing with it). Filed under: Food/wine/beer Comments: 1 Comment |

You want to know why the country is broke? It’s because all those economic stimulus projects must have gone WAY over budget. What’s that you say? We couldn’t possibly be paying $500,000,000 for 6 blocks of repaving and wide-ass sidewalks in old-town Anacortes? Read the sign sucker. I gotta get Dean Maxwell and the city council to write me a grant application for something. Given their success on 6th st, I should be able to get $100,000/yr just to stare at my belly button lint or something. $500 million is some serious safety though. I have to admit that. The other week we flew down to Palm Desert to visit the Grandparents Miller. North loved the sun, water, and family. His only regret is that he wasn’t allowed to bring back his pet scorpion, Stingy. Filed under: Family and North Comments: 1 Comment |

A sad day around our house. Oboe was hit by a car and did not survive. Unlike the tragic event that brought him into our lives, this story isn’t going to have a surprise happy ending (for those who like such things, a great photo of Oboe meeting Tuba at the previous link.) One of the people at our wonderful vet’s office saw him get hit and scooped him up right away (the vet’s office is right across James st from our house). But his injuries were too severe and there was nothing that could be done. They gave him pain medication, so he didn’t suffer. And while good to know, it’s ultimately a small comfort. The bad part about loving a pet, or loving anything living on this earth, is that none of nature’s creatures can be here forever. In a better mood, I might be able to wax poetical about “who would want to live forever”. But today, I’m just bummed about my cat. So the best I can do is to encourage us all to remember that nothing is guaranteed and that now is the time to tell those you love how much you care about them. Do it now so that later on you don’t have to wish you had. We’ll miss you Oboe. Thanks for the friendship. Filed under: Animals and Things I love Comments: 6 Comments |

MothersRoot was generous enough to provide us a year of free Zoo for North’s bday. To celebrate we saddled up while they were in town and drove HW26 to visit those fair critters. Penguins, lions, and bears! Oh my! Filed under: Animals and Family and Jack and North Comments: 5 Comments |

We’ve got some smart eco-minds that read the BR, so I know someone will have some helpful suggestion here. Sadly, like everything these days, the Bellingham dog parks are having their budget cut. This is most evident in that there are no longer poop bags at the park for you to use to pick up and dispose of your dog’s messes. Given how often people were too lazy to pick up after their dogs when there WERE bags at the park, I might have looked for other ways to cut costs. But knowing how popular those parks are in our dog-loving corner of the world, I imagine the parks dept. was spending more than any of us would expect on poop bags each year. So, the plan is for the dog owner community to bring in plastic shopping type bags and “recycle” them by leaving them for others to use. My question: Is it better to use a product twice, but throw it away after the second use, or to use it once but recycle after that use? While we do our best to try and use the canvas shopping bag on our trips to the store, the fact is that with two kids and a scatterbrained husband, it doesn’t happen 100% of the time. So we eventually end up with a pile of shopping bags from Haggen/Target/etc. Usually, I take the bags to the recycling box at the local Haggen after we get a big enough pile of them. Of course we reuse a few around the house for whatever we can, but we always end up with more than we use. So, should I keep recycling or take these bags to the dog park? Which is the better move in a “green” sense? And even after that, how does the “helping out the local dog community” feel-good aspect factor in? I’m inclined to just take them to the dog park. But you know me, I love dogs more than I love the earth. Filed under: Animals and Josh's random life Comments: 14 Comments |
